Reading Notes W2: Philosophical Satire, Part B

Philosophical Satire Poem 92 (p. 263-264) Sor Juana makes it clear that a women's role in this world is difficult "You foolish and unreasoning men // who cast all blame on women" (263 lines 1 & 2) - The first lines in this poem are a defense of women and are basically accusing men for blaming women for their own faults they have caused. Relationships between men and women are problematic Love is an conflicting emotion - angry/bitter disagreement over fundamental issues Men constantly win over women's opposition because of their superior hypocrisy Sor Juana points out the wrongdoings by men in her poem but was able to neglect the male-dominant society because of her knowledge. She educated herself and would not let judgments control her. Back then, not many were educated or educated enough so many would live by men's judgments and let men control them. Sor Juana didn't believe that was acceptable - she was an early modern feminist. ...

Time Strategies

In order to stay on track and on top of my courses, I always use a planner to write down due dates and assignments because it helps when you don't have the time to check canvas - you can just look back at your planner. I am taking 5 courses this semester, 4 online and 1 at the Brentwood LMC campus. I have 15 credits to complete this semester and that sounds like a very busy semester to me. I do work so I have to make the time for school. I only work part time though and mostly work morning shifts so in the evening I will have the time to complete assignments. I really hope I can stay on top of things this semester.

Technology Tools

This semester is the second time I've taken online courses so I am familiar with Google Docs and such. Making a blog of course was a bit difficult to do so at first since I've never used blogger before. It might take some time getting used to since it is different. I also am aware of the support sites like the academic support center and the LMC library. I find the class wiki to be very helpful. It clearly and thoroughly explains on how to do each assignment and what needs to be completed. It also reminds you to go back on canvas to finish the last part of the assignment as soon as it's completed. I appreciate the class wiki.

Growth Mindset

The growth mindset theory has an interesting thought to it. I absolutely agree with Professor Dweck's statement on the power of "yet" and "not yet" because it does help students gain more confidence in their educational careers. Hearing the word "yet," instead of automatically failing gives hope. One knows they are not finished and that this isn't the end of it and that they will eventually get to where they need to be and succeed. The opposite of that attitude is a fixed mindset. Fixed mindset students are more on the negative side. They don't have as much hope as compared to a growth mindset student. Fixed students believe they have a limit in their brain and they can only learn so much because of the limit capacity but if one can simply just push themselves slowly to not be afraid of challenges, then school work wouldn't be so scary when it gets difficult. I see myself in between both sides of the spectrum depending on what the subject...

Introduction

To start things off, I started attending LMC in the summer of 2015 right after I graduated high school that June. My favorite class I have taken thus far has to be either English 90 or English 120 both with Professor Julie Ashmore. I admire her teaching style tremendously and she is my inspiration for becoming an English major. She makes students feel like we matter and that she truly cares for us educational wise. I believe I did my best work in her class, considering I did get A’s in both classes. My biggest accomplishment is that I will be attending a CSU in the fall for transfer. I hopefully will get my bachelor’s at San Francisco State University. My best friend goes there so I will most likely be carpooling with her and I am so ready for it. I am not ready for the early morning and late night traffic but I am excited to finally attend a 4 year university. I feel like I’ve been at LMC forever – which isn’t a bad thing. I actually like LMC. They have great professors and offer...

Favorite Place

My favorite place is anywhere that has a beach. Something about the waves crashing on the sand gives me a relaxed and tranquility vibe. I recently took a trip to San Diego and went to the La Jolla beach for my cousin's graduation party and I had a blast just enjoying the scenery of the sunset setting over the ocean. Although I love the water, I am terrified to get in. I've seen too many horror/thriller films about the open water. To me, the ocean has the coolest animals. I like water animals way more than land animals. For example, jellyfishes are beautiful creatures, yet they are excruciating deadly. Besides beaches being my favorite place to visit, I'd really like to visit Rome, Italy one day. I like the history behind the place and I would love to tour around the city. I'd specifically like to visit the Colosseum for the ancient history. Visiting Rome is definitely on the top of my bucket list.   https://www.google.com/search?q=rome+italy&rlz=1C1CHBF_enUS717US71...
