Introduction

To start things off, I started attending LMC in the summer of 2015 right after I graduated high school that June. My favorite class I have taken thus far has to be either English 90 or English 120 both with Professor Julie Ashmore. I admire her teaching style tremendously and she is my inspiration for becoming an English major. She makes students feel like we matter and that she truly cares for us educational wise. I believe I did my best work in her class, considering I did get A’s in both classes.

My biggest accomplishment is that I will be attending a CSU in the fall for transfer. I hopefully will get my bachelor’s at San Francisco State University. My best friend goes there so I will most likely be carpooling with her and I am so ready for it. I am not ready for the early morning and late night traffic but I am excited to finally attend a 4 year university. I feel like I’ve been at LMC forever – which isn’t a bad thing. I actually like LMC. They have great professors and offer excellent transferable classes.

Over the winter break, I didn’t do anything exciting really except go to the AMC Theater a lot with my boyfriend. We are movie fanatics. We especially like to go on Tuesday’s for the $5 ticket Tuesdays. Our very first date was at the movies so it’s kind of funny that we made it our little tradition to always go. I recently saw the action film, Den of Thieves, starring Gerard Butler, and it was a very good movie if you’re into those type of adrenaline rush movies.

When it comes to music, I listen to almost everything. It ranges from hard rock to classical. I mostly like to listen to movie soundtracks. Something about movie soundtracks highly spark my interest. I like to listen to piano music as well. When I’m doing homework or I need to focus on a project or paper I tend to listen to piano music to get me going.

I have two dogs. They are my favorite boys in the world. One of them is an 11 year old (almost 12) Pug named Sammy and the other is an almost 2 year old mini Pinscher named Peanut. I treat them like they’re my sons. My mom says I spoil them too much but I can’t help it. I love my dogs like family.

My best friends would definitely describe me as a shy, timid person; however, I can be very loud and outgoing once I get comfortable. I’ve always been a homebody. I never went out much. I try to push myself to be more social and extrovert with my social life so I can make more friends. I’m still in the process of doing so. Other than my lack of interaction in the social world, I think I’m a pretty decent human being and I believe my best friends would agree.

  1. Alissa-- I loved your intro! I feel like I know you pretty well now (even though I haven't met you in person)! I love going to the movies as well, but I feel like I don't go as often as I'd like to! I'll have to catch up on that. Congratulations on transferring! That's got to be exhilarating, and also probably quite emotional to start that adventure! Break a leg at UCSF :)

  2. Hi Alissa! My best friends would probably describe me the same way! I am a little shy at first but once you know me and I am comfortable with you I'm really loud and fun.
I also love the movies. I go as often as I can with pretty much anyone that will come with me! Hopefully we will get to know each other more through the semester

  3. Hi Alissa!
I really enjoy your writing, thanks for the great intro! A great teacher can make a world of a difference in your college experiences, I’m glad you have a great mentor to look up to. I also just saw Den of Thieves and thought it was great! I love heist movies like that and I thought they did a great job, especially with the little twist at the end. Good luck with your future endeavors and I look forward to your posts this semester.

  4. Hello Alissa! I think it's awesome that there is another English major in this class. Having an amazing teacher definitely helps when taking classes too! I actually had a class with a teacher my friends thought was amazing and she was such a great help. I haven't seen Den of Thieves but it sounds awesome! As for music, it's awesome having a wide range in taste. I like most music genres (except rap) and it helps me connect with a lot of different music lovers. I know what its like to not be a social person so the best I can say is to just jump in feet first. Its really hard to get into the social setting if you try to take it slow cause your mind is still trying to go back to being introverted. I look forward to having class with you this semester!

  5. Hi Alissa,

I just realized I didn't respond to your introduction! I apologize for that. Congrats on getting ready to transfer. I'm excited for you! And I agree that Julie Ashmore is an amazing teacher, as well as a pretty great human being. I've had the honor to work with her here at LMC for many years. I look forward to working with you!

  6. Hello Alissa!
I enjoyed reading your intro and congrats on your transfer to San Francisco State University! I didn't really do much over winter break but I did get to see The Last Jedi though! I like that you love listening to movie soundtracks, as I'm not too different because I enjoy listening to video game soundtracks more than any other kind of music. I also have a dog as well, a very adorable Pomeranian/Chihuahua mixed named Luke! He's so adorable!! I can't wait to read more of your blog posts in the future!

  7. Hi Alissa, I know it's been a few weeks now, but glad to meet you. I enjoyed reading your introduction. Don't love when you get great professors that encourage you in your major. I had a speech teacher, who taught the class through Storytelling and she is the reason I decided to become an English major. I love that you and your boyfriend keep that special tradition to remind you of that first date. My husband and I are movie fanatics too and love going to AMC. I love also that you accept who you are ( not a big extrovert) but still make an effort to connect with new people. You are a great writer as I read a couple of your analysis already. Good luck in your journey, you are going to do great.

  10. Nice to meet you Alissa! It's good to hear that you have someone like professor Julie Ashmore to look up to at LMC. Not many people have professors as their role models or as their mentors. It's good to hear that your experience in her class has made you want to become a teacher as well. I wish you the best of luck with that!

  11. Hello Alissa!
It's very nice to meet you, even though this is finally the end of the semester! It's always nice to meet another dog lover. Does peanut like to socialize with other people and dogs? Mine didn't like other dogs for the longest time but used to love people. Now I just have my one cat. I hope the rest of your schooling goes well!
