Reading Notes W3: Moliere, Part A
Moliere pgs. 144-197
- Madame Pernelle, the mother of Orgon, is upset with her daughter-in-law, Elmire, for her actions "Daaughter-in-law, please take this well- Behavior such as yours leads straight to hell" (lines 28 & 29, p.145).
- Madame Pernelle believes her grandson, Damis, should listen to Tartuffe, who is a religious hypocrite. Damis doesn't want to listen to him because he believes Tartuffe is a trickster.
- Madame Pernelle thinks Tartuffe is the answer to saving them all from themselves and that they need his protection and advice (148).
- Cleante, brother-in-law- of Orgon, thinks Madame Pernelle is madly in love with Tartuffe (149)
- Dorine thinks Orgon is in love with Tartuffe too
- Orgon is back after 2 days and wants to know how his mother and Tartuffe are doing from Dorine and Cleante (150).
- Orgon and Cleante start to bicker about Tartuffe because Orgon wants Cleante to see how good of a man Tartuffe really is but Cleante continues to deny it (152).
- Cleante tells Orgon that Tartuffe is not a good man and that he'll regret trusting him. "Your man and his life, honestly, are hollow. I believe you praise him quite sincerely, I also think you'll pay for this quite dearly. He's a fraud, this man whom you adore" (lines 174-176, p.155).
- Orgon wants Tartuffe to be his son-in-law but is putting off the wedding and doesn't tell Cleante why
- Orgon is letting Mariane, his daughter, that he wants her to marry Tartuffe and that she must sound found of him. She has no choice because she must obey her father and complete any task he asks her to do (156-157)
- Dorine is telling Orgon it's not a deal for them two to get married
- Dorine knows Mariane doesn't want to marry Tartuffe, so he's trying to convince her not to marry him (161).
- Mariane would rather much marry Valere because she loves him
- Valere asks Mariane if it's true that she will be marrying Tartuffe instead of him and she tells him only because her father, Orgon, has said so
- Valere will be out of Mariane's life when she marries Tartuffe because he can't bare to see her in another man's arms (165-166).
- Dorine gets Valere and Mariane come back to the same room and tells them that are meant to be and should get married instead of Mariane and Tartuffe. Dorine wants to put a stop to Valere and Mariane's marriage (167).
- Dorine has a plan to put a stop to the wedding
- Tartuffe is confessing his love and admiration of beauty for Elmire (172)
- Damis is upset about Tartuffe's feelings for Elmire so he is going to tell Orgon about it
- Orgon is more upset with Damis than Tartuffe and says to Damis, "How dare you even try To tarnish this man's virtue with a lie" (lines 19 & 20, p. 175).
- Tartuffe tells Orgon why even have such good morals, loyalty and love for me when I have no worth at all (175)
- Even though Orgon has heard it all about Tartuffe, he still thinks he is a good man and is upset with Damis for not seeing so
- Orgon kicks Damis out of his house and to never come back for not begging pardon of Tartuffe
- Tartuffe knows everyone hates him so he wants to leave as well but Orgon doesn't want him to leave (177)
- Mariane lets her father, Orgon, know that she doesn't want to go through with this marriage and that she'd rather be a nun but he doesn't care
- Elmire tells Orgon that she can show him of how un-loyal of a man Tartuffe is and is determined to show Orgon because she wants him to see how blind he is for the love he has for Tartuffe
- Elmire tells Orgon to hide under a table while she gets Tartuffe to show his true side
- She is going to flirt and lead Tartuffe on so she can show Orgon how hypocritical Tartuffe is (183).
- After Orgon seen's how Tartuffe lusts after his wife, he gets upset and wants to kick Tartuffe out of his house
- Damis is upset with how upset his father is and wants to hurt Tartuffe
- Tartuffe has contracts with Orgon's signature and is now claiming the house so everyone has to evacuate the premises (192-194)
- the exempt is arresting Tartuffe because he is a coward and hypocrite and the king can see it
- Tartuffe has a crime for every sin (196).
- The story ends off happily and Orgon wants to prepare a wedding for his daughter and Valere (197).
