Week 2 Analysis: Philosophical Satire Literary Analysis
1. Literary Elements - Sor Juana Ines De La Cruz's poem, "Philosophical Satire," sets a strong tone in her writing and her tone will be the literary device I will discuss for this analysis. Sor Juana's tone had such a liberated and inspiring tonality that it almost seemed like she was trying to get her point across and make women feel outraged with the way men inferior women. In my understanding, it is as if Sor Juana wanted to make it alarming that the role assigned to women are difficult and showed her own perspective and view on society. She questions and exclaims the foolishness that goes on and I, for one, truly appreciate this poem and the tone she set because she wants to let women know that it is not okay to be inferior upon men and that something should be done about it.
2. Themes - The theme in "Philosophical Satire" is symbolized by women needing to be better and stronger and not to be knocked down by a man's judgment call. The underlying message seemed like a feminist one, like she wants women to be independent. Sor Juana made it obvious throughout her poem that men are the problem with the way women are under-looked in society. The theme that plays out in the story starts off as Sor Juana depicting the issue and then constantly questioning why do men do the things they do, yet still are full of confusion when something doesn't go right when they are the ones to blame. On page 264, lines 57-60, she states, "Why then are you so alarmed by the fault that is your own? Wish women to be what you make them, or make them what you wish they were." Once again, Sor Juana is pointing out that men are the fault at blame and women need to realize that and do and be whatever they pleased to do and be.
3. Context - The element that relates to the reading seems to be focused and informed more on gender roles in society. The whole poem is about this world being a man's world and women are just living in it. You can tell this element influences the author's work by being able to tell how passionate she was in her writing. Her writing came across as very early feminist. She repetitively states her views in various forms of men being self-righteous. This element informs her work by Sor Juana informing her readers that the society she lived in was (still is) a problem and there needed to be something done about it.
Hi Alissa, I really enjoyed reading you analysis. I agree with the message of the poem does seem as she want women to be independent and not be looked down upon by men. Standing up for what we want as women and not letting men place the blame. I also, agree with you when you say she is a feminist fighting for men rights. Great job!
ReplyDeleteHey Alissa, nice work on your analysis! I enjoyed reading it and I like how you separated each point to make it easier to read, something I should try the next time I write an analysis! I agree with your analysis of her tone in the poem. I feel that her tone is a little aggressive because she's also addressing the men who may be reading this poem and I always feel that she really is calling them out for their ridiculous behavior!
ReplyDeleteAlissa, it’s been a while since reading this particular piece of literary, however through your analysis you did such a great job in explaining the author’s intent. I could appreciate you pointing out the tone of the poem because it is through the tone we can better understand that the author wanted women to stand up and not expect a inferior position in society and to men. Great job.
