Week 9 Project Planning: Compare and Contrast
Compare and contrast elements of two different texts.
For my project plan, I'm thinking about writing about the comparison and contrasting themes from two different texts. The texts I think I'll use is Ghalib's poems "Now Go and Live in a Place" and "It was Essential" and Dickinson's poem 449 "I Died for Beauty." All three poems have the same theme which is based on death, but they speak about death in a different context.
Ghalib's Now Go and Live in a Place & It Was Essential-
Ghalib talks about death on the fourth line of the poem about "no watchman to keep you safe," I think he meant he was wishing for death, which is coincidentally the same wish he wished for in the last line of his poem "It was essential." In that poem he says, "It's my destiny to continue to wish for death for a few more days" (598). These two poems compare in a similar way because Ghalib seems to be wishing for death as an escape from his problems because of the cruel and unfortunate evens that had happened to him. His nephew died and he had to deal with the infidelity of his wife. He talks about death in a saddening way, thinking death is the only thing that can save him. These lines about death convey a sad feeling and Ghalib has his readers wonder who is he speaking to in these poems since he is expressing sincere hatred for someone. If he were to be talking about himself, like I think he is, in "Now go and live in a place," then I think this poem was a result of Ghalib's problems. But in contrast, "I Died for Beauty," seems to have a different meaning behind death.
Dickinson's Poem 449 I Died For Beauty but was Scarce-
I Died For Beauty reflects Emily Dickinson's fascination for death and the possible life to follow. Her poem revolved the theme of death but not in a sad way like Ghalib's. Dickinson takes the reader into the afterlife and and introduces two people. One who died for beauty, and one who died for truth.

"I died for Beauty-but was scarce
Adjusted in the Tomb
When One who died for Truth, was lain
In an adjoining Room-" (489)
The fact that they died for a sacrifice is what differentiates from Dickinson and Ghalib.
