Week 14 Project Planning

  • The project prompt I will discuss in my final project is "Choose a reading selection. Explore the relationship between elements of the selection."
  • So this question is asking me to explore the relationship between elements of the selection meaning for example: How does setting influence character development? This topic is interesting because you can choose any elements to compare and contrast on. You can do a character and the setting. The theme and the setting or even the theme and the character. This topic gives you a variety to pick from and I like that because then we can write about something were actually interested in.
  • I think the reading I'm going to choose to write this topic about is Ichiyo. The main character, Kichizo is a dwarf who was basically bullied his whole life because of his height and because of the bullying setting, I can talk about how this setting influenced Kichizo. The environment and setting Kichizo is placed him kind of makes him who he is. He thinks of himself as very low and thinks his life was meant to be that way. In the story, he tells Okyo, that he'll never succeed in life because he'd rather stay where he is in life, meaning he'd rather oil umbrellas because that's what he thinks he was born to do. I think my thesis will be along the lines of: The poor and bullied environment Ichiyo was placed in had an influence on his character by developing his loneliness, low self-esteem, and violent temper. One of the quotes I'll be using is on page 913. It talks about how Kichizo is upset about the fact that the only people that are friendly to him always disappear and that happiness will never come to him no matter how long he waits. This is what causes his loneliness and despair.

  1. Hello Alissa!
I never got around to reading Ichiyo so it be great to hear what the story is about through your project! That being said, I think you have a great idea and handle on what your project will be about. I never chose this prompt because either I didn't really understand it or thought that it may be a bit to broad but you seem to know what you are doing and I think you have an outstanding thesis, something I know that I struggle with a lot! And I also think that its great that you found two elements that affect each other to write about! It seems that you just need to look for more quotes and info in order to get your project together! Great work and I can't wait to see how your project will turn out! Good Luck!!

  2. Hi Alissa, you did a good job on your project action plan. It is great that you will be talking about Ichyo and his challenging life. The prompt that you chose for this project fits with the story very well and there is so much you can talk about. You can expand on the themes of the text and may be talk about individual vs society since you mentioned that Kichizo is a dwarf when compared with the others. Your thesis statement is fantastic since your argument is clear and straightforward, and addresses the causes of the character's attitude and or behavior which plays a role in the story. I had found his story very sad and maybe you can use the author's tone as well to describe the horrible life that Kichizo has. You are going in the right direction for your project and I am looking forward to see what you come up with. Nice Work.
